Explore the connections between music and nature with the Winter 2025 Issue of Piano Inspires Kids.

Special thanks to Skyela Marie, age 11, for designing the Music and Nature cover, titled Music at the Pond.
The Musical Sounds of Nature
Have you ever listened to the steady sound of raindrops or the song-like melody of a bird’s call? Music can be found all around us in nature, and many composers take inspiration from these sounds—the flowing waves of the sea, the howl of wind in a storm, or even the buzzing of insects!
Discover composers who were influenced by nature, including Claude Debussy, Florence Price, and Olivier Messiaen.
Music of Native & Indigenous Peoples
Native and Indigenous peoples often weave nature into their music, showing their connection to and respect for the natural world. Inspiration is found all around—from animals, water, and trees, to the sun and the moon.
V. Jessica Sparvier-Wells is a Nehiyawak (Cree) flutist, dancer, and artist who lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has college degrees in music and contemporary arts. In her creations, she braids together Indigenous identity, history, language, and land into all her work as a performer, musician, and dancer.
